When a natural disaster threatens our community, it's hard to be prepared. Whether it's a blizzard, heavy rains or strong winds, Mother Nature doesn't usually give us a warning. The time to prepare for a storm is not while it's happening...it's now!!
No matter if you live in the North East, or Mid- West, you should always be prepared for any type of disaster. No matter the extent of the damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County is here and ready to help you get your business or home back to its preloss condition!
In 2018, there were 1,797 injuries in the US.
When you're preparing for a disaster, there are some things you should always have ready:
Family Emergency Plan - This should include places to find shelter, evacuation route from the house, emergency contact numbers.
Be Financially Prepared - Gather important medical and financial information, keep an emergency savings account, and be sure your insurance will cover your needs!
Pet Emergency Plan - Be sure you and your children know how to get your pet ready and transport them if needed. You should have a kit with items for them such as food, blankets etc.
Emergency Weather Alerts - FEMA has a mobile app that will notify you of any warnings for 5 locations, as well as provide shelter information. Get the app here
Food and Water
When you are preparing a kit with food be sure the foods:
- Have a long shelf life
- Require little to no cooking or refrigeration
- Can meet the needs of babies if applicable
Storing Emergency Food:
- Store foods away from appliances with an exhaust fan, this can cause them to spoil
- Store away from products such as gasoline and oil, some foods may absorb the smell
Preparing emergency food:
This may be tough if you have lost power, gas, and water, but having these tools will help
- Cooking utensils
- Eating utensils
- Paper plates, cups, napkins or paper towels
- Manual can and bottle opener
- Aluminium foil
- Propane or charcoal grill, or camping stove
- Only use charcoal grills OUTSIDE of your home
Emergency water
You should store at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and pet. Store more if there are pregnant women, or sick people in the home. You should have at least a 3 day supply stored up now, in case a disaster does strike.
