Signs of Water Damage in your Jefferson, MA home
1/2/2020 (Permalink)
Stains on your floor or ceiling are good indications of water damage.
When water is contained properly, it can be handled as a minimal threat to your home. When water floods and soaks into your floors and walls, it can develop into a serious concern. Water that isn’t dry and is just sitting (standing water) is an environment waiting for mold to begin growth. Within 48 hours mold can begin its growth.
Here are some tips for detecting water damage in your home.
Look around outside
Take a walk outside of your home, look at the exterior. Any pools of water can indicate poor drainage. Gutter spouts that aren’t moving water far enough away from the house can cause puddles as well. These can threaten your home's foundation if the standing water gets inside.
And you should absolutely check your roof. Common signs of water damage are pools of water, warped or missing shingles.
Check your floors inside
If water damage is present in your floors, it will let itself be known. Tile and wood floors may be cracked or warped. Carpets may be damp, or have raises and soft spots throughout.
Use your sense of smell
Mold will often not be visible to you, so if you smell anything funky it could be a sign of an unwanted intruder… a.k.a. mold. If it has been there for a while, you might have gotten used to it, so step outside first then back in so you will have a fresh sense. When water is stagnate, it is a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. It will produce a very musty smell.
If you do detect mold, exit the home and call a mold remediation professional (508) 234-3399
Be on the lookout for stains
Check the floors, walls, and ceilings, as well as and nooks and crannies. If there are stains around the tub, toilet or sink, that is a sign of water damage. As stated before, stains on the floor, walls, and ceilings are also indicators of water damage.
