Winter Weather Warnings and What They Mean - Boylston

When you hear a winter storm warning on the news, we know that it's best to pay attention, but do we know what exactly they mean?
In Massachusetts it's common to see winter storm or weather advisories on the news, but there are many of them and they all have different meanings.
Here are a few:
Winter Storm Watch:
Issued when there is potential for significant hazardous weather in the next 48 hours. This means winter weather is possible.
Blizzard Warning
Within the next 12-18 hours the following conditions are expected:
- Sustained winds of 35 or more MPH
- Snow and or snow blowing reducing visibility to 1/4 or less miles for 3 or more hours
Ice Storm Warning
1/4 or more inches of ice accumulation
Winter Weather Advisory
Issued for any amount of freezing rain, or 2-4 inches of snow is expected.
Dense Fog Advisory
When fog is expected to reduce visibility to 1/4 or less miles over a large area for 2 or more hours
Wind Advisory
- Sustained winds of 31-39 MPH for an hour or more
OR
- Wind gusts of 46-57 MPH for any number of hours
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
- Winds of 58 or more MPH
OR
- Hail 1 inch or more in diameter
Frost Advisory
When the min. temp is forecast to be 33-36 degrees.
