Dudley was incorporated in 1732, but originally settled in 1714. Dudley gets it's name from Paul and William Dudley. Dudley is located on the border of Connecticut
Today, Dudley is home to many open fields and farms. According to the Town website, Dudley is a "green" community. Dudley has earned the "Green Community" designation. They aim to reduce energy costs day to day!
85 births have been recorded in Dudley! The most popular names being Liam and Mia...how adorable!
In 1887, the West Dudley Cooperative Creamery was established and by 1905 there were 31 dairy farms within the town! These dairy farms and the creamery provided milk and other dairy products for the local area.
Currently the population is 11,682 and is home to many historical landmarks and buildings. Dudley is home to Nichols College which was founded in 1815! One of the most popular historic places in Dudley is the Black Tavern. This is the only building in the town that is on the U.S. Department of the Interiors National Register of Historic Buildings.
The original building was built in 1804 and was originally known as Healy's Inn. Guests and residents of the town began calling it the Black Tavern because the founder, Hezekiah Healy painted the building black. Placed right on the route from Boston to Hartford, it was the perfect spot! These days, the Dudley Elementary School has been successful in raising money to help restore the barn at the Tavern! They host events such as weddings, meetings etc.
The town covers about 22 square miles in Worcester County. It is neighbored by Southbridge, Charlton, Woodstock, Webster and Thompson, CT.
