Before we talk about preventing mold, let’s talk about mold itself. What is it? Where can it grow? How does it grow? Should I try to get rid of it myself if I see growth in my Mendon business space?
What is mold?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Molds are part of the environment that can be found basically anywhere oxygen and moisture are around. Molds are a fungi and are present indoors and outdoors. Some molds are good, like the ones used to make medicine such as penicillin, but other molds can be harmful to our health.
When mold is present indoors, like in your house or office space, that is usually a sure fire sign of water damage. Mold can grow on a variety of materials, even paper!!
Where does mold grow?
Mold can grow anywhere. All it needs is a little bit of moisture and it’ll thrive (and not in the good way when it comes to your property). Mold can grow inside or outside. The mold spores can get into your home from open doors, windows, your clothes…
Building materials are prime real estate for mold to grow. This can include wood, insulation, wallpaper, carpet and more.
How does mold grow?
When mold spores are introduced to an environment where there is moisture, they will begin to grow into colonies (the green or black spots we usually see).
Should I try to remove mold myself?
It is NOT recommended to DIY remove mold. It can be dangerous to your health if you aren’t trained properly in mold remediation. At SERVPRO of Southern Worcester County, we are highly trained in the mold remediation process, and we will safely and effectively remediate the mold problem in your commercial space or home!
Preventing mold growth in your commercial space
While mold spores are present everywhere, it is possible to reduce your risk of mold growth.
- Keep your eyes open: keep your eyes open and create routine plans for inspections around your property. Mold can grow in as little as 24-48 hours!
- Stay up to date on repairs: if you notice a leaky window or doorway, or anything coming from the roof, get it repaired right away! Letting moisture build up will lead to mold growth, which is a bigger, more expensive problem to fix.
- Decrease moisture and humidity: run dehumidifiers if the humidity level is always high in your building, especially in basements. This will keep the levels low and keep the area dry.
