Tropical Storm Watch | Southbridge, MA

Staying informed is one of the most important things you can do during any storm!
In the early morning hours of August 3rd, the National Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning/watch throughout Southern New England.
Tropical Storm Warning vs Tropical Storm Watch
A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the next 36 hours. This means winds from 39-73 MPH.
Tropical storm watch means that the tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.
Preparing your home for storm weather
Keep trees and branches outside your home trimmed back, and if you happen to have some extra time, put your patio furniture inside, in the shed, or secure it down. You won't want to look outside to see your table flying into the neighbor's yard!
Clean your gutters, this can help prevent water from backing up, and entering your home.
Take a walk-about of your home and make sure there are no holes or gaps in any windows or doors that could let water in.
Be sure you have these supplies handy just in case the power goes out:
- Extra water
- Batteries
- Flash lights
- First aid kit
- Battery powered radio
- Extra blankets
- Extra (clean) clothes
- Games (to keep the kids [and you!] occupied)

Driving during severe weather
Flooding can happen in a matter of minutes after heavy rains begin. During flooding or heavy rains, if possible, avoid driving through any flooded roadways or puddles. Just 6 inches of water can force your car in any direction and put you in danger.
If you're driving a larger vehicle (trucks), be aware that the winds will affect you more than smaller cars. It's important that, no matter what size vehicle you're driving, you drive slow. Wind speeds and weather conditions can change in a moments notice. Driving slow can reduce the chances of getting into an accident.

This past weekend, we experienced a ton of rain and wind in the Uxbridge area and we are expecting some more in the next few days.
Preparing for a thunderstorm
Learn about your community's emergency warning system for severe thunderstorms.
Discuss thunderstorm safety with each member of your household, especially children.
Pick a safe spot inside for the family to gather during a storm. This spot should be away from any windows or glass doors.
Make a checklist of any items you may want to bring inside or put in the shed before the storm comes.
Protect your fur babies the same way you would protect the rest of your family. Keep them indoors during any heavy rain and wind.
Always have a first aid kit handy.
During a thunderstorm
Keep updated on the news, listen for emergency updates, and keep your eye on the sky.
If you see any changes to the sky, or hear any weather reports and you're planning on doing anything outside, it's best to postpone your outdoor plans for another day.
If you're outside when it begins to thunder, seek shelter ASAP.
If you can hear thunder, you're close enough to be in danger of lightning. The American Red Cross says "if thunder roars, go indoors!
DO NOT take a bath or shower during a thunderstorm. If your house is struck by lightning and you are in the shower, you are at risk of being struck.
After a thunderstorm or heavy rains
Stay away from any storm damaged areas.

NEVER drive through a flooded street. You may not know how deep the water will be.

Massachusetts Lightning Safety Awareness Week

This year, lightning safety awareness week falls on June 22nd-26th.
While we all love to spend time outdoors during the summer months in New England, did you know that the summertime is the peak season for lightning??
According to the National Weather Service:
- 25 million lightning strikes occur in the US each year
- In the past 30 years, the US has an average of 47 fatalities per year caused by lightning
- Lightning has injured about 12,000 people
- It is the cause of around 25,000 fires per year
Lightning can strike up to 25 miles away from the actual storm! This means you could be in danger of a strike even if you aren't in an area where the storm is over. If you can hear thunder, you are in 'striking distance'. According to the National Weather Service, "When thunder roars, go indoors" and stay inside until 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder.
What if I am outdoors before/during/after a storm??
If you are planning on being outdoors this summer, be sure you update yourself, friends, and family (whoever you're outdoors with) with the latest weather forecast before heading out on your hike, walk, bike ride... The NWS recommends taking a portable NOAA Weather Radio or AM/FM radio with you on your trip to keep up to date.
When you arrive at your destination, be sure to look for somewhere you can find shelter in the case of a storm, and how long it would take you to get to this shelter. Keep an eye on the sky for any changing conditions. If you hear thunder or see lightning or dark clouds, immediately get to your place of shelter.
- If there is no actual building/shelter, a vehicle will be your next best option.
During a storm
Avoid using any landline phones. This is one of the leading causes of injuries. You can use your cellphones, but not while they're on the charger
Don't touch any electrical equipment. Using a TV, computer, appliance, could put you more at risk for a lightning strike.
Water and plumbing appliances are great conductors for electricity. Avoid washing dishes or showering during a thunderstorm.

You might not think a thunderstorm is dangerous, but they in fact, are very dangerous! Each and every thunderstorm produces lightning. Lightning is one of the most dangerous killers there is!

What causes thunder and lightning?
Thunder is the sound of lightning traveling from the cloud to the ground.
“When a lightning bolt travels from the cloud to the ground, it actually opens up a little hole in the air, called a channel. Once the light is gone the air collapses back in and creates a sound wave that we hear as thunder” As we know, light travels faster than sound, so the sound of thunder always comes after the lightning strikes!
How can you tell how far away the storm is??
Count the number of seconds in between when you see the lightning strike and hear the thunder. Take the number of seconds and divide it by 5, that’ll get you how far away the storm is in miles!!
Did you know: lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun?! It can reach up to 50,000°F!

Winter Weather Warnings and What They Mean - Boylston

When you hear a winter storm warning on the news, we know that it's best to pay attention, but do we know what exactly they mean?
In Massachusetts it's common to see winter storm or weather advisories on the news, but there are many of them and they all have different meanings.
Here are a few:
Winter Storm Watch:
Issued when there is potential for significant hazardous weather in the next 48 hours. This means winter weather is possible.
Blizzard Warning
Within the next 12-18 hours the following conditions are expected:
- Sustained winds of 35 or more MPH
- Snow and or snow blowing reducing visibility to 1/4 or less miles for 3 or more hours
Ice Storm Warning
1/4 or more inches of ice accumulation
Winter Weather Advisory
Issued for any amount of freezing rain, or 2-4 inches of snow is expected.
Dense Fog Advisory
When fog is expected to reduce visibility to 1/4 or less miles over a large area for 2 or more hours
Wind Advisory
- Sustained winds of 31-39 MPH for an hour or more
OR
- Wind gusts of 46-57 MPH for any number of hours
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
- Winds of 58 or more MPH
OR
- Hail 1 inch or more in diameter
Frost Advisory
When the min. temp is forecast to be 33-36 degrees.

WHAT IS STORM DAMAGE?
When water from weather events such as a rainstorm enter your building at certain entry points, it is considered stormwater. This water must enter the building before touching the ground. Such as:

Winter Storm Warning - Massachusetts

There is a winter storm warning in effect until 7AM Tuesday, December 3rd.
Heave snow is expected to fall with accumulations of 4 - 10 inches.
This could impact travel and early morning and after work commutes.
- Keep a flashlight, food, and water in your car in case of an emergency.
Stay indoors during the storm.
If you are outside, walk very carefully if the road or sidewalk is icy.
Before you head out on the road, let someone know where you are headed and what time you will get there. Just in case your car gets stuck.
When you are shoveling the snow, be sure to take breaks in between.
Always stay dry, as leaving wet clothes on can cause you to lose body heat, increasing the risk of hypothermia.

Although a disaster can strike at any moment, that does not mean you and your family cannot be SERVPRO ready. Here are a few SERVPRO tips.
- Make sure you and your loved ones have a plan of action. Build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan for when storm strikes. It doesn't need to be written down, but as long as you all are aware of protocol that's what matters..
- Next, remove tree branches and debris that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
- Make sure outdoor events and activities are postponed.
- 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
- Secure outdoor objects, like tables and chairs. Bring umbrellas inside, since they're prone to flying away and the cause of many past beach injuries (After all, have you been to Webster Memorial Beach???)
- Seek shelter in your home, business, or car (a convertible will not help you in this situation). Do not stay outside.
- Close windows and doors. Close window blinds, shades, curtains.
- Unplug any electronic equipment and keep a portable charger handy in case of power outage.

The World Didn't End in 2012, But This Storm Made It Seem That Way...

Hurricane Sandy provided the Southern Worcester County community with a wake-up call to get that flood insurance!

Hurricane Sandy was arguably the most damaging storms in Massachusetts history, or at least one of them. Being a coastal state, Massachusetts floods and storms are common - it’s nothing new. Starting as a tropical Depression off the coast of Nicaragua on October 22, then by October 26 it swept over Jamaica and continued North to the United States. Sandy’s power kept fluctuating from a tropical depression to a Category 1 Hurricane. As a result, Amtrak services stopped, Logan Airport cancelled its flights, the MBTA stopped running, and many other transportation services throughout Uxbridge and Southern Worcester County were delayed and cancelled. Countless universities in Massachusetts and New England cancelled classes and events. Sandy was so detrimental because people were not informed of how bad it was going to be. There were literally hundreds of thousands without power – roughly about 380,000.
The lesson for homeowners and business owners is to get flood insurance, especially in the coastal state of Massachusetts. Floods are not usually covered by regular insurance, so be sure to take initiative and get that coverage. Hurricane Sandy is a prime example of what happens when the community is ill-prepared. Natural disasters can happen anywhere and anytime.

- Tropical cyclone is a category 3 or greater on the Saffir Simpson hurricane scale.
- Sustained tropical cyclone surface winds of 100 knots (115 mph) or greater are occurring or are expected to occur within one hour.

A watch for an increased risk of a gale force wind event for sustained surface winds, or frequent gusts, of 34 knots (39 mph) to 47 knots (54 mph), but its occurrence, location, and/or timing is still uncertain.

- Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
- Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
- Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.

Protecting Your Home
- Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells. This allows warm air to circulate around pipes.
- Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through un-heated or un-insulated areas of your home.
- Consider shutting off outdoor faucets. Find the shut-off valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to "off."
- If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shut off.
- Ensure gutters are clean and secure. leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.
- Proper maintenance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of puff-backs.

Preventing Frozen Pipes

As the cold winter months rapidly approach us, frozen pipes become a regular occurrence throughout the region. Since water stored in these pipes expands once frozen, the expansion places pressure on the containing pipe, including both metal and plastic pipes. This pressure can cause the pipes to crack and break, potentially causing a problem to you and your home. To ensure that this does not happen once the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, here are some basic preventative tips:
- Drain the water from all pool and sprinkler supply lines.
- Remove, drain, and store hoses that are used outdoors. Also, be sure to close the inside valves supplying the outdoor hose spouts. Keep these open to allow all the water remaining in the pipe to drain.
- Know where your water supply lines are in unheated areas. Make sure these pipes are insulated, to ensure the security and safety of them.
- Think about insulating water pipes with materials such as pipe sleeve(s) or heat tape and cable to protect pipes that are exposed. This can serve as an extra barrier for extreme freezing weather.
- Keep your garage doors closed.
- Keep your thermostat at the same temperature during the daytime and nighttime. If you are away from your home for an extended period of time, be sure to set the temperature in your home no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit (American Red Cross).

Although a disaster can strike at any moment, that does not mean you and your family cannot be SERVPRO ready. Via our corporate headquarters, here are a few tips that you can do to minimize the potential for a loss:
- First, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
- Next, remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
- Postpone outdoor activities.
- Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
- Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
- Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
- Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
- Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
- Finally, unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

Tornadoes are arguably nature's most violent storms. Generated from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes generally appear as rotating, funnel-shaped clouds extending from the closed base to the ground. With winds that can reach up to 300 miles per hour, tornadoes can cause massive destruction within seconds. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and fifty miles long.
- The average tornado moves southwest to northeast, but tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.
- The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 miles per hour, but may vary from stationary to 70 miles per hour.
- Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land.
- Tornadoes are most frequently reported east of the Rocky Mountains during spring and summer months.
- Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Category 3: "Black Water"
